Chairman of the Portfolio Committee for Police, Francois Beukman, said the high murder rate of South African Police is something that Minister Bheki Cele would put at the top of his agenda during his tenure at the helm.
The right of South African Police to protect themselves was a major theme, during Cele’s tenure as Police Commissioner – when he was even reported to have said Police must shoot to kill.
Beukman’s comments come in the wake of the massacre of officers, by a group of terrorists, at the Ngcobo Police Station last month. The lack of fear that criminals have for South African Police is something that people cannot ignore.

“The Ngcobo attack and all killings of police officers is unacceptable. It is totally unacceptable that the symbol of the state can be attacked in this manner. It is time for South Africans to say: ‘No more’,” said Beukman.
“The first priority for the incoming Minister is to put in place strategies to deal with the high murder rate of police officers,” added Beukman.

However, the police cannot do it alone. Communities have been called upon to assist with keeping police safe and fighting crime. Information is key.
“A collaboration between the police and society in general is necessary if police are to fight crime effectively and if communities are to live in a safer environment. We call on communities to protect police by sharing information. Police should not be on their own,” explained Beukman.

  1. Why police always wanna be assisted on their job, I think we have to inform and hire brain workers in this institution.

  3. I think instead of wasting their voices calling upon the communities to help them do their jobs the minister should start by finding new trained police officers who are fit for the job, who are willing to do the job, what we have is far from good

  4. I think South Africa needs the police offers who will cordially do their jobs, not for money. Most of the South African police officers do not do their jobs with passion. For people to be police officers, they need to be rich so that they cannot be cheap for robbery.

  5. I also believe that the lack of fear of police by the criminal has decreased. In Cele's time police were respected and feared because babengahleki.
Now that Mbalula is the Minister thugs arrle taking chances. But I'm impressed by that they found the suspects early and took care of them to also convey the message to others.

  7. Pointing fingers of people will not come up with ways that can fight crime instead of doing that the government should come up with plans to fight crime.
